Why Menlo exists
A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.
We’re living through a moment that happens rarely in history. The kind of moment where what was impossible yesterday becomes ordinary tomorrow. Machines can now think, reason and act.
Every major technology starts by imitating what came before. Then it discovers what only it can do. Electricity first replaced candles, then it created industries, cities, and ways of living that had no equivalent in the candlelit world.
Thinking machines are at the beginning of this arc. We’re still in the “faster version of the old way” phase. Most companies are building AI that does existing jobs cheaper. This is the horseless carriage moment.
What we believe
We believe the most important uses of thinking machines haven’t been invented yet. They will come from people we’ve never met, solving problems we’ve never heard of. We’re building the foundation.
We’re building the foundation of thinking machines:
- We open-source most of the work
- We build in public
- We choose partners based on character
- We’re open to JVs
An open invitation
We’re building for the next fifty years.
Companies that last multiple generations share a trait. They create more value than they capture and leave ecosystems healthier than they found them.
