Community

"People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories, and magic." — Seth Godin

Most tech is forgotten inside a year, and most marketing goes the same way. People see so many ads that the default is to tune all of it out, which makes paid attention both expensive and shallow. You rent it, and when the budget runs out you have nothing left.

The most iconic brands have something underneath the marketing: a group of people who found them early, understood what they were about, and stuck around. A cult following. When people genuinely believe in what you're building, they carry it for you. They:

  • tell their friends
  • show up
  • vouch for you in rooms you'll never be in

That compounds in a way an ad budget never does, and no one can buy it out from under you.

We've always put our effort into community for exactly that reason. A good community is about more than a product. It's people who share our values and see the world the way we do. We're not for everyone, and we're fine with that. We'd rather have a small group who get what we're doing than a big crowd who don't.

Show, Don't Tell

The best part of our work is that it's physical, so we can just show it. A robot crossing a room does something to people that no screen manages, and there's real magic in seeing it up close: you can walk up to it, poke at it, and ask questions.

Showing beats telling, as long as you're honest about what you're showing: what we tried, what broke, what we changed, where we are now. This has always been our best marketing.
